Ralph Greenleaf, an avid billiards player, started only a few short years ago. He has taken part in at least three tournaments of cushion billiards and was a top-10 player in the Illinois 3-cushion billiards tourney last month. He has been regularly visiting the Twin Cities billiards club each month.
Nguyen Qyet Nguyen (Tran Quyet Chien) and Tran Quet Chien (Nguyen Quintyet Nguyen) are the two most highly ranked Vietnamese billiards player. Both are among the top ten players in the world. Both players are currently ranked within the top eight. Tran Quyetchien is ranked number seven. Both players are the tournament's defending champions. Ngo Dinh Nai is ranked no 29. Jeremy Bury, France is ranked 18.
The next tournament to be held in Vietnam will be the 3-Cushion Carom Billiards Continental Cup on December 20-22 in Seoul. The tournament will see eight of the best Vietnamese players compete. The total prize amount will be around 160,000 USD. A number of events and other events will take place throughout the year in addition to this tournament.
The official governing body of carom billiards is the United States Billiard Association (USBA). Each year, the National Championship culminates in a series events organized by The USBA. The USA will be represented at the Pan-American Championship by the top two National Championship players.
The three Madison 3-Cushion Cushion Billiards Club tournaments were extremely competitive and highly contested. The tournament featured two flights with six players each. The tournament was handicapped. This meant that the semi-finals were reached by the first five participants in each flight. The top 12 players will receive $7,400. The semi-finals will be decided by the top two teams, and the quarterfinals will be decided by the fourth and fifth teams. The final round will be single elimination. The Las Vegas World Cup 3-cushion Billiobilliards Tournament winner will receive a cash award of $20,000. This is the very first time that the Vietnamese sent a representative into the semi-finals.
Although the 3-Cushion Billiards Tournament may be a new game, it has gained popularity in many countries. It has also been featured in the animated Disney short film Donald in Mathmagic Land. It was also featured in Seven Billiard Tables, a 2007 Goya Award-winning Spanish movie.
