The snooker world ranking system is an official list that ranks players by their recent performance. It is administered by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). Each ranking series event is updated with this listing. To be eligible for the World Snooker Tour, players must hold a current ranking in snooker. Players are seeded according to their performance in specific tournaments and their ranking.
For the first two years, the snooker world rankings were based on the results of three World Championships: the World Open, UK Championship, and the Professional Players Tournament. Each of these events had a winner who was given one seed. The runner-ups got two. Each season from 1976 to 1982 the World Championship was the only ranking event, but in 1982 the International Open became the fourth ranking tournament. More tournaments were added as the competition grew.
The World Championship saw the return of the knockout format. This is considered to be the beginning of the modern era of snooker. Most records today are based upon the 1969 period. There are currently a total of 31 titles on the snooker world ranking list.
Ray Reardon was the undisputed leader of the snooker game in the 1970s. He was the World Champion and won six Welsh amateur titles. He won the 1974 World Championship. It was the first ranking event. He held the record for highest number of ranking titles until Steve Davis took it away in 1998. However, he eventually retired from snooker.
Stephen Hendry was one among the most dominant players of the 1990s. He held the number 1 ranking for eight years straight and won seven world titles. He is currently tied with Ronnie O'Sullivan on the all time ranking titles list. But he is retiring from snooker after the 2012 championships.
Judd Trump is the current world ranking snooker winner. He is the snooker player award winner. He has not yet been able to take the top spot. He was one point behind Mark Williams when he started 2019. Both players will face off in the finals of the 2020 UK Championship and the Cazoo Masters.
Kyren Wilson is another big name in the rankings. He is a Premier League specialist. He is a sports tipter and enjoys playing in the NBA or MLB. He enjoys playing the NFL and MLB. He has been a winner of four ranking finals in his two previous seasons. There have been two losses.
Mark Selby, four-time World Champion, has been defeated in the World Championship semi-finals. He has also suffered from high-profile defeats throughout his career.
From September 12-16, India's fourth Open World Ranking Snooker Tournament (Indian Open World Ranking Snooker Tournament) will be held in Visakhapatnam. Many celebrities will be present to witness the action. Entry to the event is free.
